They are two inter-related but different topics, having each one its own characteristics. Therefore, two different fields of research can be considered (although both are strongly related): The use of the Van Hiele Model to understand and organize the acquisition of abilities of spatial visualization and the use of the Van Hiele Model to understand and organize the learning of 3-dimensional Geometry. This paper deals with the first field, presenting results of an exploratory experiment aimed at improving the abilities of spatial visualization in sixth-grade students. Possible

An Assessment of the Readiness of Grade 10 Learners for Geometry in the Context of Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) Expectation
In 2012 January, as part of the ongoing process of curriculum revision which began in 1994, the South African Depart of Education (DoE) introduced the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS). The CAPS brought Euclidean geometry with its formal proof back into the compulsory mathematics curriculum. It also implied that all learners needed to perform at level 4 (Deduction: with formal p...
متن کاملUsing the Van Hiele Theory to Analyse the Teaching of Geometrical Proof at Grade 8 in Shanghai
The data reported in this paper come from a study aimed at explaining how successful teachers teach proof in geometry. Through a careful analysis of a series of lessons taught in Grade 8 in Shanghai, China, the paper reports on the appropriateness of the van Hiele model of ‘teaching phases’ within the Chinese context. The analysis indicates that though the second and third van Hiele teaching ph...
متن کاملAn application of the Rasch measurement theory to an assessment of geometric thinking levels
The purpose of this study is to apply the Rasch model to investigate both the Van Hiele theory for geometric development and an associated test. In terms of the test, the objective is to investigate the functioning of a classic 25-item instrument designed to identify levels of geometric proficiency. The data set consists of responses by 244 students (106 for a pre-test and 138 for a post-test) ...
متن کاملLearning Geometry Intuitively with the Aid of a New Computer Tool: The Geometer’s Sketchpad
The Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM, 1989) recommends that students in elementary and middle school grades should be studying geometric properties and relationships through practical experiences with shapes and patterns, integrating mathematical experiences with their art work, and through the use of geometric computer programs. The Standards emphasize that “Ins...
متن کاملAn Application of the Generalized Rectangular Fuzzy Assessment Model to the van Hiele Level Theory of Geometric Reasoning
The Generalized Rectangular Fuzzy Assessment Model (GRFAM) is applied for the evaluation of student group acquisition of the van Hiele levels of geometric reasoning and an example is presented illustrating our results. The GRFAM is a variation of the Center of Gravity defuzzification technique created in an effort to treat better the ambiguous assessment cases being at the boundaries between an...
